New Semester, New Classes, New Events

by Mackenzie Wilson

A new semester has started, meaning a fresh start with new classes, new people, and better yet, new events happening all around campus. With the spring semester starting, hopefully nice weather will accompany these new events, and everyone can enjoy a little sunshine. I asked students around UMSL about what they are looking forward to most this new semester. Some students had some events they were looking forward to while others did not know what events were happening.

There are so many events goings on this semester that it would be close to impossible to cover them all, so here are ten events to highlight the excitement happening around UMSL. If you are a fan of daytime television or game shows this event is one you might want to check it out. On January 31st, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, UMSL is holding their very own game show version of The Price Is Right. This event is held in the Nosh- the bottom floor of the MSC (Millennium Student Center). There you can just quickly visit and play or watch. Who knows, maybe you will even win a prize? This event also qualifies to earn you Commuter Cash which can be used at the end of the semester to bid on even more prizes, even a TV!

Next on the docket are the many events they have centering around Black History Month. I will highlight a couple in this article. Kick off Black History Month right with some great food. The first event being held is the Soul Food Celebration. This event is held on February 1 st from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. This is a magnificent event to share experiences or learn about black experiences and connect with others. So, head on up to the third story of the MSC (Millennium Student Center) 3rd floor to get some free food and learn about others’ experiences. Another event happening that focuses on Black History Month is an event called Black Love. A panel discussion will be held at the MSC Century Room A on the 15th between 6 pm and 8 pm. The panelist will talk about romantic relationships in the black community. This event is free; however, you will need to register through Triton Connect so the leaders can get a headcount on how much food to order.

Despite February being Black History Month, those are not the only events being held in February. First, you have probably been getting emails about this one. I know I have; the Spring Jamboree is happening February 8th from 11 am to 1 pm at the MSC. This event also qualifies for Commuter Cash and there is no registration needed. All you must do is arrive and earn some free prizes and giveaways. If you do not have a gift for your significant other this Valentine’s Day or just want a cupcake, this is an event for you. On February 14th at the Fireside Lounge, stop in between 11 am and 1 pm to decorate a cupcake. This is a free event so all you need to do is show up! Who does not like cupcakes? Another thing everybody loves is games! UMSL is holding an event filled with retro arcade games on February 9th. This event is also free, you can just drop in between the hours of 11 am and 1 pm at the Nosh. Travel back in time to the 80s and 90s and enjoy a little bit of fun! This last event is one of the most anticipated events happening in the spring semester. Come pack the stands at Homecoming then get your groove on at the Homecoming Dance. The dance is being held on February 24th from 7 pm to 10 pm. There will be food, music, and some Commuter Cash. You must register through Triton Connect to attend this event, but it will be worth the 30 seconds it takes. So stop on by the Touhill Preforming Arts Center and dance!

If you miss out on video games in February fear not, in March on the 18th, join us for Video Games and Laser Tag in Parking Lot E. From 10 am to 12 pm you and your Tiny Tritons can enjoy free food and fun! Another event taking place in March is Cookies and Crafts. On March 21st between 11 am and 1 pm, stop by the Fireside Lounge to enjoy some free food and fun crafts. This is another event where you can gain Commuter Cash from as by this point, the end of the year is around the corner so you can cash those in for prizes and drawings.

The last event that I am going to highlight is one of my favorites to attend. Mirth Week is taking place on April 26th from 12 pm to 5 pm on the RWC East Lawn. This event will be chalk full of people, food, games, and fun. This event is free to attend and there will be free food, giveaways, and prizes. It is open to anyone who would like to come. Bring your Tiny Tritons, parents, alumni, or even just your friends. With all these events scheduled, this semester is sure to be filled with a lot of fun!
